Review: The Pet War

Wow!  What a great read.  I wasn't sure about this book when I first chose it off of the shelf at the book fair, but I wanted something new to read and the teaser sounded interesting so I decided to give it a try.  I'm so glad I did!

I'll start with the main character.  Otto was fabulous and kept us laughing throughout most of the book.  From his crazy ideas to make money to his bumbling dog escapades to his inability to understand that 25% is not half.  His character slowly learned that responsibility really does make you feel good, friendship shouldn't be taken for granted, and sometimes... it is ok not to win.  All great messages that we can take away with us.

I think my favorite part of the story was the dog party and poor Mr. Chatterbox, the dog toy, who was mercilessly ruined when every single dog there decided they wanted him at the same time.  I think this was when Otto realized that the party wasn't going to end well... lol.

"The poor stuffed monkey's screams were now screams of agony, as pieces of face, fur, and arms were ripped to shreds by a horde of frenzied dogs.  Two dogs played tug of war with a leg.  Another dog ate Mr. Chatterbox's head and then threw it up.  I didn't want to watch, but it was like a traffic accident.  I sort of had to look, even though it was horrible."

I think the story ended well.  I kind of predicted that somehow Otto would end up getting his dog.  It was like an extra bonus when it ended up being Thumper (or Horseradish, as dad named him).  I just love happy endings.  :)

Well, let me know your thoughts.  What parts were your favorites?  Did you have any connections?  Were there parts of the story that made you empathize with the characters?  Anything you want.  What a great read aloud!
